MAPPING: the act of making a map or maps; a representation, usually on a flat surface, of the features of an area of the earth or a portion of the heavens, showing them in their respective forms, sizes, and relationships according to some convention of representation; a maplike delineation, representation or reflection of anything. (Webster Dictionary)
The purpose of a map is to chart direction, or in colloquial terms, “to bring something into the public eye, to make something
known”. A map can be a plan, diagram, chart or graph in its presentation of the various representations of surfaces, facts or ideas. The works in Mapping: Martha Street Studio explore the many dimensions of artists’ mapping including geological mapping, geographical mapping, memory and dream mapping, the mapping of personal histories and genealogies, mapping of visual concepts of the universe, and the photographic mapping of place.
