With this exhibition, Leigh Konyk extends her investigation into photo collage and experimentation with new materials, mediums and imagery to produce complex, layered images that evoke multiple interpretations. Beginning with one main photo as the central focus, ideas, words and images merge together, creating visual narratives; a dialogue with memory and personal history, human behaviour and family dynamics including the complex, yet universal life experiences we all seem to share.
In this exhibition, the manipulation and reinterpretation of photographs depicting my own family and those collected from friends and acquaintances delve into the past to suggest lingering, unresolved life circumstances or seemingly simple childhood memories that have helped shape each of us as individuals. A variety of elements are combined together in each piece to underscore its contents. Text and phrases culled from random sources, old magazine advertisements, sewing patterns and other mixed media, enhance my unique portrayal of each photograph chosen.
