July 29, 2010
In his Winnipeg live solo debut, Goth legend Steven Severin (Siouxsie and the Banshees) will be appearing at the West End Cultural Centre on July 29th, 2010. He will perform a moody new score he composed for renowned French artist Jean Cocteau's silent avant-garde film Blood Of A Poet (Le sang d’un poète) from 1930.
Blood Of A Poet, was Cocteau’s first film and brought all his diverse talents into focus. Like another Surrealist classic L’Âge d’or by Luis Buñuel, Blood of a Poet was financed by the Vicomte de Noailles, a famous patron of the arts. There are many scandals that surrounded his film due its controversial content and subsequently delayed its release. Common comparisons to L'Âge d'or would only anger Buñuel and his fellow Surrealists, who belittled Cocteau as a "literary poseur". Nevertheless, Cocteau remained true to his artistic vision and created films unlike the norm; thus, retaining a lasting place in cinematic history.
