Crimes of the Heart

April 9 - April 10, 2010

Prairie Theatre Exchange (PTE), Prairie Theatre Exchange, 3rd fl. Portage Place Mall, 393 Portage Ave

Description

Warm-hearted, irreverent, zany and brilliantly imaginative, the play teems with humanity and humor as it examines the plight of three young Mississippi sisters betrayed by their passions.

The scene is Hazlehurst, Mississippi, where the three Magrath sisters have gathered. Lenny, the oldest sister, is unmarried at thirty and facing diminishing marital prospects; Meg, the middle sister, is back after a failed singing career; while Babe, the youngest, is out on bail after having shot her husband in the stomach.

“It's a wickedly funny black comedy; very southern U. S.,” says Mariam Bernstein, the show’s director. “It’s also gloriously universal in its celebration of how we can get through the bad times with hope, laughter, and the unconditional love of family.”

In the end, the play is the story of how its young characters escape the past to seize the future—but the telling is so true and touching and consistently hilarious that it will linger in the mind long after the curtain has descended.
